Intertwining Dynamic Static and Symbolic Approaches Over the years, obfuscation has taken a significant place in the software protection field. The term generally embraces any mean aiming at slowing down the analysis of a program, either by an analyst or an automated algorithm. As such, it has gained a certain popularity in the video-game industry.

Unfortunately, it has also gained popularity in the malware underground ecosystem, leading to the need of deobfuscation techniques. The only property that should be preserved by obfuscation is the semantic of the program, i. Hence, in the broadest sense, deobfuscation is the mean to make the behavior of the malware more intelligible, taken as a fact that recovering the original program is impossible in the general case.

The first step toward understanding a binary program is to disassemble it in order to obtain a good representation of its Control-Flow Graph CFG. As a consequence, obfuscation techniques also aim at fooling existing disassembly tools and techniques. Standard obfuscations usually target either static analysis CFG flattening, self-modification, etc. Thus, taking advantages of different approaches might become essential to handle obfuscated codes. While static analysis cover the whole program but is quickly fooled by obfuscations such as self-modification, dynamic analysis helps getting a real execution trace of the program but is limited to one or a few execution paths.

In between, dynamic symbolic execution DSE — aka concolic execution — helps covering more new paths in the program using symbolic values and automatic solvers.

There are so many styles and types of clocks, made by so many clock makers and from so many countries, that I was totally lost. Over many years, I have learned a lot. I have concentrated on the American clock companies for my collection, so there is much for me to learn about clocks from outside the US. The question I get most from the comment form on this web site is:

The Seth Thomas Clock Company was organized as a corporation on May 3, in Plymouth Hollow, Connecticut (later to become Thomaston) to succeed the earlier clock-making operation of the founder.

This happened to me the other night. A dear friend and I were talking about our kids and how to help them transition from children to adults. The topic of dating and relationships came up and we started talking about my story. It somehow validates my belief that some of the teachings I grew up with were very wrong. Fear of loving and losing. Fear of making the wrong choice.

Short 10″ pendulum and verge escapement. Because of the short pendulum it could stand on a table, but the timekeeping was poor. Another Lantern clock, C , with the “new” long pendulum and anchor escapement this clock had to be hung on the wall to run. Often known as “hoop and spike” clocks because of the iron hoop to hang the clock from, and the spikes at the bottom to dig in the wall and keep the clock steady. From now on the timekeeping of clocks improved by a huge amount using the longer pendulum and “anchor” escapement.

Around the same period, with a slightly larger dial and a wooden hood to keep the dust out of the clock movement. Still the same lantern clock movement inside, but without the expensive brass body. It would not be long before the weights and pendulum were enclosed altogether to stop the pendulum being knocked accidentally when walking past the clock. The first fully-enclosed clock known dates to , the one pictured here was made by Edward East in London, dated Now instantly recognisable as a longcase, or “grandfather” clock.

This style lasted for two hundred years till around , when huge imports of cheap mass-produced German and American clocks put an end to longcase manufacture for good.

Fresh from the estate of a gentleman whos grandmother worked as an operator for the Bell Phone Company in the San Francisco Area back in the ‘s. According to the family, as electric time began making its way into the world, the older windup clocks were mostly destroyed, but some were given to employees, which was the case with this rare piece.

The clock was brought home by the gentleman’s grandmother and proudly displayed in her home for many years to come. During that time, the clock managed to stay in one family until my recent purchase. Connecticut, incidentally, was an important and expanding hub in the American clockmaking trade. He had imited formal education and left school at an early age to become an apprentice carpenter and joiner to Daniel Tuttle, of Plymouth. Seth was apparently a man of few words with great energy and perseverance in all that he did; thus, he paid strong attention to the duties of this apprenticeship.

In the early s, Seth attempted to set up a clock-making industry in Wolcott. He made his first clock in his family’s house. The woods around the house were filled with mountain laurel trees; many Wolcott men worked cutting the trees and sawing them into thin slices, which, when seasoned, were used for the wooden wheels of the clocks.

The name Seth Thomas is symbolic of value and excellence of craft, as a result of the variety of sophisticated styles it has produced since As the longest established clock maker in the United States (nearly years), Seth Thomas is recognized as one of .
