Damn, it was so inexpensive that I could almost afford to smash it on stage! But as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. This allowed some elbowroom for Gibson and Fender to rethink and retool their operations to fortify their position in the market. To avoid the same problem happening again, Gibson bought Epiphone and started building some very nice Imported Copy Guitars! Fender opened facilities outside North America under different brand names like Squier. These were all imported from Japan under different brand names. The Univox guitars are popular today because Kurt Cobain of Nirvana used one.

This is one of the most frustrating questions from the MIJ collector. People often make the mistake of citing the American or European importer as the ‘maker’ of the guitar, when in fact several Japanese manufacturers were producing badged guitars out of their plants and shipping them to America and Europe to sell. Japanese manufacturers made multiple badges at the same plant, many of whom resemble each other closely.
Some manufacturers merged or changed hands over the years which added to the confusion, sometime merging with another maker, only to pick up their name later. In some cases a manufacturer would farm out production to various manufacturers, making it still more difficult to know who made the guitar in your hands. Parts from other guitars would be used in the making of a particular badge for a period of time because it was all the manufacturer had to hand And sometimes, the guitar which is supposed to be an MIJ guitar is actually made elsewhere Korea, Indonesia because production was moved during this period in history.
This page is a work in progress and as new information is revealed it will be added to the list. But I can’t do this alone, folks.
Epiphone Serial Number
New Mexico Hi, I’m a pretty much amateur guitar player looking to pick up a new guitar. I’ve been researching this for a while and trying out various guitars, and so far I have kind of narrowed it down to the Epiphone p93 and the Gretsch pro jet. I’m looking closest at these two guitars because they both fit well within my price range, both have a bigsby tremelo, they are extremely well reviewed, and are both stunningly beautiful, although, personally, I think the Pro Jet gold is just the tiniest bit prettier than the Epiphone.
But at this point I’m having trouble deciding between them. I’ve heard a ton of good and bad for both, most significantly that the bigsby tends to detune the Pro Jet and the P90’s can be lukewarm in terms of quality.
Unique Epiphone models, including the Emperor, Zephyr, Riviera and Sheraton, are built to higher quality standards than the company’s “Gibson copy” line . In Epiphone introduced a series of acoustic guitars named Masterbilt after a line of guitars of .

The Epiphone Interview On January 14, , during the era of popular music when the electric guitar had been pushed aside by keyboards and synthesizers, Henry Juszkiewicz and Dave Berryman, two entrepreneurs who had met in graduate school, purchased a struggling guitar company called Gibson. Thrown into the bargain was another guitar company owned by Gibson since Epiphone. While Juszkiewicz and Berryman went to work putting Gibson back into shape–improving quality, distribution, and dealer relationships–the new owners also began to slowly unravel the long history of Epiphone, the House of Stathopoulo.
The serial number is and it’s located on a stick-on strip on the back of the headstock. The front of the headstock has “Epiphone by Gibson” at the top and the Epiphone logo at the bottom. Cheers.
What Guitar Is This??? I was told it was a “blem” model so it was slightly less expensive than most Rivieras. I didn’t see anything wrong with it, it played well, sounded great, and looked killer. When I got home I looked it up and decided that it was a Nick Valensi signature model with P94 pickups, and have told a number of people this over the last year. I noticed today that my pups are not p94’s.
They look more like mini humbuckers. I just looked at some photos online of the Valensi signature model, and noticed that the truss rod cover on that model has his signature on it, mine is just the epiphone “E. My Riviera is Cherry and the Valensi model is only available in natural finish. Now, none of this would really bother me if I were able to find any other guitar like this online!

How to Find the Value of an Epiphone Guitar By Eric Hadap ; Updated September 15, You’ve been doing some spring cleaning in your new house, rummaging through this and that, and found a dusty old guitar case that you’ve never seen before. Is it gold or is it junk? Or maybe the bills have hit you extremely hard and that guitar you bought as a kid, which these days just takes up space in your closet, is starting to give you ideas.
Whatever the reason, determining the value of your guitar isn’t as daunting a task as it may seem. Note the model of the guitar, year it was built and the overall condition mint, excellent, badly scratched, etc. If you can’t determine the year it was built, write down the serial number.
The Epiphone Riviera helped reinvent Epiphone in the s as a modern guitar company whose instruments sported such contemporary features as thinline, semi-hollow, double-cutaway bodies and humbucking pickups. In the minds of older guitarists, Epiphone was a traditional New York-based company, with.
Dave Gregory Now if you want to talk guitar, ask Dave Gregory. He was crushed that he couldn’t take his entire guitar harem over 20 with him for Oranges and Lemons, but he made do with his faves: Gregory uses Ernie Ball strings “out of force of habit,” but creates his own gauge set: He has a Roland JC amp “for those rare occasions that I go out of the house,” and a Japanese Fender Sidekick 30 amp for home practice. The Roland PG programmer that goes with his D confuses the hell out of him.
He seems to be having more fun with a new toy, a Alesis HR drum machine. Partridge records home demos on a vintage Tascam Portastudio; for that purpose he keeps a “fizzy” Session MKII amp — “not fantastic”.

There are a lot of good articles that have already been written about Gibson’s humbucking pickups, so instead of getting deeply into the evolution and technology, I’ll just try to cover the basics to the ES. The PAF is considered by most to be the best sounding pickup ever made. Not all of them, though. Because they were largely made by hand, there as many different winding patterns as there are pickups.
