Bill Hall is a collector. He’s also a scientist now retired from the lab. On this program, he has in the past, discussed collecting everything from cards, glass, tickets, even sick bags from airlines. But today it’s toys; many of those we took for granted as kids, may in , be worth oodles. Whenever I see a Dinky toy my eyes start to water. It’s not just the childhood memory, although Dinky toys have an important part to play in that; it’s the thought that I didn’t keep my collection.
Why didn’t someone tell me, when I was nine years old, to hold on to my investment?

Both wars disrupted the flow of toys from Germany — allowing opportunities for North American factories to churn out dollhouse furnishings — and prepared the way for the inroads of plastic in the late s. But during the ’30s, metal, wood, cardboard and cloth formed the bulk of miniatures, while plywood, fiber-boar d and cardboard were the choices for dollhouses.
Colourful printed papers were glued over these cheap materials. In tandem with commercially made products, home-made dollhouses continued to be created by doting fathers and grandfathers with home-made furnishings right such as curtains, rugs, bedding, and even furniture supplied by doting mother and grandmothers or even ambitious children.
These might be mingled with factory made furniture, some of which was very cheap to purchase. Even the simplest of home-made furnishings are interesting today because the fabric patterns and colours speak to us of a past that grows ever dimmer in our memories as grandparents and parents — who lived through the Dirty Thirties — pass away in the early 21st century.

I love Sindy Pedigree dolls the most so the site is a tribute to them. The idea of introducing a teenage fashion doll along thee lines of the successful Barbie doll was first conceived by the British company Pedigree Soft Toys Ltd. In and the resulting doll Sindy was released in September Deliberately going for a prettier, younger and sweeter look than vixen like vintage Barbie Doll, she had an extensive range of high quality fashions and accessories styled by top British designers.
The Sindy Doll has been through many face and body mould changes as various companies took over manufacture and marketing, Sindy has also had a variety of companions, houses, horses, fashions and professions. Five companies have manufactured Sindy Dolls.

Here is a delightful pair of brown stained wooden garage doors from an old Tri-ang dolls house, still has all four original metal hinges plus the two original tack handles too. Each door has scored vertical lines to give the illusion of paneled doors.
The firm now trading as Johnson Bros. They later took the name of Chad Valley as their registered trademark and the building was to remain as the company headquarters for over seventy years. In that same year both the Wellington and Harborne works were extended as business continued to increase. Interestingly enough they also featured Stand Nos. This may have had something to do with the fact that earlier in a bold move the Palace had been approached by Chad Valley executives for permission to produce dolls of the Royal Princesses, Elizabeth and Margaret Rose.
The Second World War resulted in production of toys being dramatically cut as the Chad Valley factories concentrated their output to the war effort with government contracts for the production of such items as wooden instrument cases and cases for use in anti-aircraft guns, hospital tables and tent poles, auto-pilots and charts. However one factory was retained by the government for toy manufacture, specialising in the production of jigsaws, chess sets, draughts and dominoes for use in military hospitals and the Forces generally.
In it stopped being a family business and became a public limited company. Over the next ten years or so they go on to expand by acquiring several companies including in the metal toy manufacturers of Hall and Lane, in the family business of Robert Brothers Gloucester Ltd.

Friday, March 13, Homemade Australian – Californian Bungalow style house, late s Here is another of my homemade Australian dolls houses. Like the Federation bungalow, this one also comes from Sydney, probably from the Centennial Park area. I loved the front of the house when I saw it on ebay: I love the pylon-shaped window frames and door frame – wider at the bottom, narrower at the top.
This shaping of exterior and interior timbers is typical of the very common architectural style known in Australia as ‘Californian Bungalow’, which was imported from California in Other features of this style are diamond-paned leadlight casement windows, and porthole windows in the front door in real houses, usually filled with a stained glass design of an Australian native bird or animal.
This house is definitely not a bungalow, and it doesn’t show as many features of this style as the Californian-bungalow style house in Dolls’ Houses in Australia But I think that the maker of this house definitely had this style in mind – and the white picket fence is so typical of Australian towns and suburbs.

It might be a bit of a cliche to write a New Years Eve post reviewing the year but if I don’t do my own year who will. Raels didn’t have a good time, not only was it a reminder of my past life for her but she had to spend a fair bit of time working and with work comes stress and she couldn’t relax properly. At the end of her two kids, young adults really, were living with us, my second son after being asked to leave the family home needed somewhere to live and my youngest daughter was with us every second weekend.
We have a small three bedroom house and had decided around Christmas time that we needed something bigger so on returning from holidays we spent every weekend looking for land and in late January put a deposit on a block of land in an estate called “The Avenue at Casey”. At that stage we had decided we needed a 5 bedroom house and had signed with Porter Davis. By March though Meg and Damian had moved out so we started to prevaricate over whether or not we would continue with the build or not and come mid year we had decided to down size a little and build a 4 bedroom house with Carlisle homes.
Our land eventually settled at the end of November and our slab is due to go down on 20th January. Work continued and responsibilities increased throughout the first part of the year but started to sour a little around July when a number of people were made redundant and there was a distinct lack of consultation with me about my role and that of the people who were in my team at the time.
So I came to the decision in October that it was time to move on. And so found myself in a new position with a new slightly rocky role that is still yet to be played out. The next few weeks will be interesting as decisions are made and I may well find it could be time to make an early move onto something else.
More of that elsewhere. In around March Mum was put into hospital after bleeding from the bowel but after tests showed no sign of anything other than a possible infection she came home. Hospitals were a regular visiting place with Erin having her fifth operation on her diaphragmatic hernia which I will never stop worrying about.
